Week 1 Ash class

Image
This morning, under beautiful blue skies—perfect Forest School weather—Ash Class began their first Forest School experience! The excitement was infectious as we set off ready to connect with nature! As with every new group, we started by learning the important rhythms, rules, and patterns that will guide us each week. On our walk down to the Forest School site, we thought of our own nature names, which we use each session. Gathering in the Forest School circle, we talked about the canopy above us and introduced our key rule: “Don’t pick, don’t lick, and watch your stick!” We kicked things off with fire circle etiquette, playing games like swapping places and animal matching. But the real excitement began when we got to explore the woodland! The children used hazard flags to mark things that could be dangerous or areas we want to protect—like the beautiful daffodils and newly planted trees. Some children crafted nature bracelets or weaved sticks while others built an incredible den—comp...

Week 6 Hazel Class Capture the flag!

Image
This morning, Hazel Class had their last Forest School session – and what a blustery one it was!  Although it was far too windy for a fire, keeping warm became our top priority. As soon as we arrived at the Forest School site, we dived into an exciting and intense game of Capture the Flag. Each round brought new rule changes, with the children learning how to play fairly, adapt, and most importantly, make sure everyone was having fun!  Some children got creative, building a treehouse, while others worked with willow to create valentine weaves. Despite the chilly wind, we managed to enjoy a well-earned hot chocolate (with biscuits and marshmallows, of course!). Towards the end of the session, we had a go at lighting the storm kettle. It was fascinating to watch how the wind affected the small fire, making the wood burn down incredibly fast.  Hazel Class have been fantastic throughout their Forest School sessions – brilliant team players, problem solvers, and always full of...

Week 6 Hawthorn Class - The Throne!

Image
Hawthorn Class – Determination, Teamwork, and a Throne Fit for Forest School! This morning, our wonderful Year Five children enjoyed their final Forest School session—and what a memorable one it was! On our way to the Forest School site, we grabbed the litter pickers and collected some rubbish that had been blown around the playground. But the real challenge of the day came when we stumbled across a large wooden slice of a tree, generously donated by Liz Smith. This tree had been brought down in a recent storm, and the way it had broken made it look just like a throne! I told the children it was too heavy to move down to the Forest School site, but they were the most determined group. They saw it as a challenge, and they weren’t about to back down! First, they tried rolling it. Then, they found some old plastic tubes and used them for traction. Eventually, they even brought out a wheelbarrow and rope, working together with incredible problem-solving skills. After a well-earned break, w...
