Year 3 Aspen Week 1

 What a fantastic first Forest School session for Aspen Class (Year 3) this morning! 🌿✨

There was high levels of excitement as we made our way down to the site—many of the children had never visited before, which made it even more special. On our journey, we began thinking about our nature names, as at Forest School we leave our classroom names behind. Sitting together around the fire circle, everyone shared their chosen name.

We spent some time learning about the canopy, exploring the Forest School site, and discovering the wildlife that visits. To help us get familiar with our surroundings, the children went on a quick hunt to find key features of the site—everything from a den and pinecone to the swing, flag, wildlife camera, water source, and even a newly planted tree.

Then it was time to get busy! Den building was incredibly popular, with children learning how to tie simple knots using withy ropes, carry sticks safely (especially when they were bigger than them!), and work together to create entrances, trenches, and even flag posts for their shelters.

There were so many wonderful activities happening across the site—some children tried their hand at making chalk paint, while others took part in fire striking for the very first time. It was brilliant to see their confidence and teamwork grow throughout the morning!

Beech Class week 1 conkers, blackberries and wind!

Today Beech class had their very first Forest School adventure! The weather gave us everything again! bright blue skies with rainbows one moment and heavy downpours the next – but we embraced it all and had such fun in the rain and wind!  We started by walking down to our Forest School site, thinking about a good Forest school name. Around the fire circle, we played games, shared ideas, and talked about the treasures of autumn – conkers, acorns, and blackberries. Mrs Sunderland showed the children how to use a palm drill to make holes in conkers for threading, and then we picked juicy blackberries from the hedgerow to mash up for tie-dye. The children loved experimenting with fabric, elastic bands, and berry dye to create beautiful patterns. There was plenty of excitement with den building, bug hunting, and even catching raindrops from the canopy. Pear Class week 2 wind and fire

This morning our Year 1 Pear class braved the blustery weather for Forest School! On our walk down, we used colour charts to see if we could match natural and man-made objects – it was amazing what we found. At the fire circle we checked in with our nature names, then looked up at the canopy to spot what was new, different, or changing around us. After that, we got moving with a lively fire circle game, matching our partner or creature with actions and noises – lots of laughter all round! Mrs Sunderland demonstrated how to use a fire striker safely with flint, steel, and cotton wool, before we set off on our activities. The wind gave us plenty of inspiration: we made wind-catchers from natural materials, threaded ribbons through conkers, and had great fun throwing and racing our conkers in the gusts. To finish, we had a go at fire striking, then we warmed up with hot chocolate and biscuits. We even managed to get some wood chopped ready for our very first fire next week! 🔥🍫

Pear Class week 5 toast

  This morning’s Forest School session could easily have been mistaken for a summer’s day — warm sunshine and a gentle breeze, perfect Forest School weather! As we made our way down to the site, the children were brilliant nature detectives, spotting feathers, rabbit holes, and even dents under the fence — we wondered if they might be made by badgers or foxes! Using this knowledge, we set up our Forest School wildlife camera to see what creatures we might capture on film. When we arrived at the site, hidden around the woodland were pictures of animals and their footprints. The children’s challenge was to find a picture, bring it to the fire circle, and match the tracks to the right animal — lots of great thinking and teamwork! Then it was time to get busy! With lots of conkers to hand, there were conker runs, zip lines through the trees, tree climbing, and den building galore.
